An unexpected thing working on this series has taught me: I never really respected abstract work before. Too much of what I'd seen over the years felt like an excuse, paint thrown at a canvas with nothing underneath holding it up, no observable skill involved. I admit, in the past when trying to appreciate some abstract art I often fell in the, "my toddler can draw better than that" camp.

Doing it myself changed that fast. There's no object to lean on in abstract work. No tree or face to carry the composition while you get away with a questionable color choice or a value relationship that doesn't hold. Every decision is exposed.
“Organic Convergence”, 126x90cm (approx 50x35in), Acrylic on Canvas, 2026

Where a line thickens, where two colors sit too close in value, where the eye is supposed to enter and where it’s supposed to rest, none of it hides behind subject matter. It might be the most technically demanding work I’ve done, and it’s made me look at a lot of abstract painters I used to dismiss with a lot more respect.

Ultimately I’m discovering that it is a much more freeing way to paint, not bound by having to paint a “thing”, …just following my own eye, my own sensibilities, honed by the past 15 years of practice.

As always, comments and feedback are appreciated.
